Design Management in Complex Projects using a Simulation Based Approach

Increasing sophistications and complexity of modern projects create new challenges to design management practices. This paper discusses an integrated approach for managing design complexity in engineering projects. Innovations in architectural design, construction processes, information technology and communications and increasing regulations have significant contributions in resulting complexity of projects. Appropriate understanding and management of complexity increase chances for project success. In this research, a process simulation technique has been employed for assisting proactive and optimal decisions in definition and development of complex projects. Simulation techniques allow design of mathematical-logical models of a real world system and experimentation with different alternatives on the computer. It provides a basis for scenario analysis of the project in real time. The approach provides a platform for real time project definition based on technical, functional and operational aspects of the project. The simulation based methodology developed in this research helps visualizing the feasible project options and manage the best alternative design. The suboptimal process level decisions derived from simulation models are further analyzed for holistic decision making at the project level.
